Children Receiving Nursery Education Grants

With effect from 1st April 2005, North Somerset Council are amending the procedure for claiming nursery education grants for playgroup sessions.

Currently a child is entitled to claim for up to 55 sessions during an 11 week funding period. There are 3 funding periods per year and each child can claim up to a maximum of 33 weeks per year. As Portishead Playgroups open 38 weeks per year, an additional charge is required in respect of the 5 weeks that are not funded by the grant.

North Somerset Council have recognised that some pre-school education providers are open for the longer 38 week period and have amended their procedures to reflect this. Each child can continue to claim for their 55 sessions, but each funding period has been increased to between 11 and 14 weeks subject to a maximum of 38 weeks per year. (The maximum number of grant funded sessions each child is entitled to remains the same 55 sessions per funding period.)

This will mean that children claiming for 4 or less sessions per week in total can now claim up to a maximum of 14 weeks in one term. Therefore all sessions with Portishead Playgroups will be covered by the Nursery Education Grant and an additional charge will n longer be required.

If a child is claiming funding for 5 sessions per week (either solely with Portishead Playgroups or jointly with another provider) the grant entitlement of 55 sessions will continue to cover the first eleven weeks of each funding period. Where Portishead Playgroups are open for longer than 11 weeks, an additional charge will continue to be applied for all sessions that are not funded by the grant (i.e. the number of sessions above 55 in each funding period.)

Portishead Playgroups will no longer apply an administration charge when a child joins the playgroup.

Should you have any queries regarding this matter, please contact a member of staff or alternatively contact the Management Committee directly.
